Most of us share two common feelings when it comes to discussing Leonardo DiCaprio – a sheer and uncontested respect for his acting abilities, as well as complete and utter confusion that the shelf above his fireplace remains empty of any much-deserved Oscar awards.
We’ve seen him play a paranoid detective haunted by the dark secrets of his past in Shutter Island, we’ve seen him navigate his way through people’s very own private subconscious in Inception, we’ve seen him adopt a convincing South African accent (although anyone from South Africa will cringe at how much he totally botched it) and hunt for Blood Diamonds, and we’ve seen him sink into a blissful romance while the famous Titanic sunk around him.
Then of course there are the many convincing real-life profiles he has portrayed – Howard Hughes, J. Edgar Hoover, Jordan Belfort…
However, this latest role he has just signed on to at the end of February promises to be the single most challenging character he has ever portrayed in a film.
The movie is called The Crowded Room, and follows Daniel Keye’s 1981 nonfiction book, The Minds of Billy Milligan, which describes the life and times of a man named – you guessed it – Billy Milligan, who suffered an agonizing mental condition in which he had 24 separate voices with their own individual personalities speaking to him inside his head and taking control of him at any one time.
While it sounds incredibly difficult and even borderline impossible to make a film where 90% of the narrative is taking place inside a person’s head, Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg are currently working hard to adapt the book for the screen, and if anyone can bring the character to life while the cameras are rolling, it’s Leo.
And if he’s going to play 24 separate characters within one mind in a single movie, surely ONE of those 24 characters has to win him an Oscar, right? Although I’m sure that’s not his reason for choosing the role…
For a little more insight on the plot of the upcoming film, below is the author’s personal description of the nonfiction book, exactly as it appears on his website (www.danielkeyesauthor.com).
“Out of control of his own actions, Billy Milligan was a man tormented by twenty-four distinct personalities battling for supremacy over his body – a battle that culminated when he awoke in jail, arrested for the kidnap and rape of three women.”
“In a landmark trial, Billy was acquitted of his crimes by reason of insanity caused by multiple personality – the first such decision in history – bringing to public light the most remarkable and harrowing case of multiple personality ever recorded.”
“Twenty-four people live inside Billy Milligan. Philip, a petty criminal; Kevin, who dealt drugs and masterminded a drugstore robbery; April, whose only ambition was to kill Billy’s stepfather; Adalana, the shy, lonely, affection-starved lesbian who ‘used’ Billy’s body in the rapes that led to his arrest; David, the eight-year-old ‘keeper of pain’, Arthur, the Englishman; Ragen, the ‘keeper of rage’ who possessed incredible strength; Allen, the con man; Tommy, the escape-artist, and all of the others, including men, women, several children, both boys and girls, and the Teacher, the only one who can put them all together. Each of these ‘people’ play a distinct role in this often shocking true story.”
Intriguing stuff, right? I think it’s safe to say this film won’t be a romantic comedy or some kind of light-hearted action adventure…
Also, the fact that this role calls for a long scraggly mess of facial hair might finally explain once and for all why Leo has been growing an impressive beard for quite some time now! Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
