The Supreme Court today Wednesday, January 27, upheld the election of Nyesom Wike as the duly elected governor of Rivers State.
Wike
had approached the apex court after the Appeal Court upheld the
decision of Rivers State Governorship Petitions Tribunal which nullified
his election on October 24, 2015. APC candidate Dakuku Peterside had won the appeal court sitting
challenging Wike's election as the Rivers State governor.
Wike took the case to the Supreme Court and
has gotten the ruling that will ensure he remains Rivers State governor
till at least May 2019.
The
ruling was delivered by Justice Kekere-Ekun. The apex court 7-man panel which
was headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed
will provide reasons for their judgement on February 12.
